Love to create repeating blocks in your quilts but tired of the same patterns? Step away from the ordinary and try your hand at a new technique-based approach to improvisation. Gorgeous photographs illustrate 10 beautiful projects where Amy Friend seamlessly bridges the gap between improvised design and technical execution. Discover a unique approach to creating one-of-a-kind blocks with guided exercises that explore scale, symmetry and alternate gridwork. Then, with Amy's help, you'll have the opportunity to design your own patterns. You really can have a dash of the unexpected through improv with the precision of paper piecing and still create those secondary patterns we all love in quilts made using traditional blocks.
With a modern spin, Improv Paper Piecing gracefully guides the reader, step-by-step, through improvisationally designing your own paper piecing patterns to strategically setting the grid so that the end result is a masterful, unique quilt of repeated blocks.
Discover how quilting came to be a favorite pastime for an estimated 3 million quilters in Japan today, as well as a multimillion dollar business. For 40 years, Japan looked to America and imported quilts for ideas and inspiration. Now, contemporary Japanese quilters, with their own style, seek inspiration, museum shows, and audiences in the West, while modern-day Western quilters admire the distinct aesthetics of their Japanese counterparts. Meet more than a dozen award-winning quilters, including Yoko Saito, Keiko Goke, Noriko Endo, and Yoshiko Jinzenji. Each has a well-defined, individual style, yet they share the impeccable technical standards common to Japanese artists. Learn the inside story of former painters, seamstresses, homemakers, graphic designers, and manga artists, who have all made a career in quilting. Over 200 photographs show the Japanese artists’ quilts and studios, and the antique American quilts that once inspired them.
This little 30”x30” beauty was made with the ‘Homeward’ fabric collection designed by Natalie Barnes (Beyond the Reef) for Windham Fabrics. I was honored to be included again in the "My Nine" quilt collaboration with my original quilt being auctioned off for charity. This medallion style quilt features an 18” ‘Round’ Sunflower block surrounded by a colorful band and petals to create this Homeward Bloom. Makes a great wall-hanging or a beautiful medallion to begin a larger project!
This 56”x56” medallion style quilt features Kathy Doughty’s “Horizons” fabric collection from FreeSpirit. Compass blocks finished using the OctaCompass method for a no-circle finish. Bonus pattern included – Happy Horizon 45”x60”. Must have purchased the Fat Robin 16-Point Mariner’s Compass Book and Ruler combo (or the former Fat Robin 60˚Mariner's Compass Book and Ruler combo).
"This interstellar quilt features Skinny compass blocks appliquéd onto a two-toned wedge background. Inspired by Elon Musk's endeavor to go to Mars, and what I thought to be the perfect gift for my daughter to give Elon while working at SpaceX."

Requires purchase of Skinny Robin 16-Point Mariner’s Compass Book and Ruler Combo (or the former Skinny Robin 45˚ Mariner's Compass Book/Ruler and former Skinny Robin Companion Booklet), and 32-Point Mariner's Compass Book/Ruler.
